| Solar Therapy |
Evpatoria is a place loved by the sun. For 240-280 days a year, the sun does not leave the city. The quantity of solar days in Evpatoria outnumbers all other known Black Sea resorts. Consequently, year round solar therapy has long been used here.
With complex Talasotherapy, solar baths are widely used.
The powerful medical action of solar energy on the body of a person was known in ancient times. Solar radiant energy should be considered strong-acting medicine. So, as with any medicine, a dosage regime for solar therapy must be strictly followed. Not all types of sunshine affects a person to the same extent. The spectrum of solar rays consists of seven colors. On each side of the visible spectrum are the invisible rays: the red part of the spectrum has infrared thermal rays while on violet end has the so-called ultraviolet rays. |

At the Evpatorian resorts, solar therapy occupies one of the most important places among the other climatic factors with medical and preventive uses.
Solar energy, moving through the earth's atmosphere, is subjected to changes before it reaches the planet's surface. These changes come in two ways: solar energy quantitatively decreases due to absorption of solar rays by air and its impurities, and it qualitatively changes as a result of dispersion and reflection by that same air and impurities. Air absorbs all types of rays, some in greater amounts, some in lesser amounts. Of all of the solar rays, ultraviolet rays are the most effectively absorbed by the earth's atmosphere. This absorption depends directly on the thicknesses of the air layer and the existence of various impurities
(water vapor, dust, etc.).
The flow of ultraviolet rays begins with small amounts at sunrise, quickly increases as the sun ascends and reaches a maximum at noon. By evening, the flow of ultraviolet rays falls to zero. The amount of ultraviolet radiation during daylight is more than is needed for medical purposes and conditioning of the body, so it is not necessary to go into the midday heat as it is possible to burn the
skin.
The morning's moderate amounts of ultraviolet radiation are sufficient for medical purposes and with our usual climatic conditions, the morning is free from intense
heat.
Evpatorian physicians have contributed greatly to the development of solar treatment methods. Following a recommendation by Professor Boiko, the practice of measuring dosages of solar procedures with calories instead of minutes was introduced in Evpatorian resorts for the first time in the USSR. Here, in Evpatoria, Professor Jakovenko defined for the first time the equivalent-effective temperature for delivery of solar baths. Professors Tregubov, Shenk, Medovikov, Kornev, Sorkin and many other have done much for the development of solar therapy methods for various diseases. Currently, the practical questions regarding solar therapy continue to be successfully
studied.
Dosing solar baths using a calorie measurement lasted for several years in Evpatoria and in many resorts this method is presently being used. However delivery of solar procedures by calories does not take into account the most active ultraviolet radiation. That is why since 1956 Evpatorian resorts have altered the dosing of solar procedures by considering ultraviolet
radiation.
There are many instruments to measure the power of ultraviolet radiation. The sun's ultraviolet radiation at Evpatoria's Bioclimatic Station is measured using an auto-dosimeter from Assistant Professor Lebedev's system. This instrument records total ultraviolet amounts (from sun and sky) within a range of 300-400 milli-micron waves, defines the energy intensity of the flow and simultaneously collects portions (the dose) of the radiation's energy. Practical reports on the ultraviolet radiation received during solar procedures is provided by a broadcasting network from the Bioclimatic Station to the medical beaches of the sanitariums. Receiving medical doses of solar energy begins at 7 in the morning. The medical dose consists of a 1/8 biological dose. The biological dose is the least amount of ultraviolet irradiation that causes reddening of the
skin.
Asolar bath can be taken only once a day. In each person's case, a doctor should establish the quantity of solar baths
recommended.
Solar baths in combination with motion (gymnastic exercises or games) are easier endured and provide a greater medical effect for a person. So it is recommended to take solar baths in a vertical position. | |
